In the heartlands of India, where access to quality education is often limited, Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS) has been leading a quiet revolution. For over three decades, BGVS volunteers—ranging from school teachers to scientists—have carried the light of literacy to the farthest corners of the country.
What began as a literacy movement in 1989, has now grown into a people-led initiative promoting education, health, gender equity, and local governance. From organizing community learning centres to empowering women through knowledge, BGVS proves that change is sustainable when it starts at the grassroots.
During the pandemic, BGVS volunteers worked tirelessly to run awareness campaigns, support frontline workers, and assist vulnerable groups. Even in the toughest times, their belief in collective action never wavered.
Today, the movement stands stronger than ever—active in 23 states and 350 districts—with over 2.78 lakh volunteers. These everyday heroes remind us that literacy isn’t just about reading and writing—it’s about dignity, participation, and hope.
